"It's great for us and will improve the quality of the meat in the wintertime, because we won't have to move the meat from the cold outdoors," Cole said. "We'll also have the smoker capacity to try and experiment with new menu items, wood combinations and temperature combinations."

By 2015, the property was more or less in the same state as it was when I visited last November: entirely abandoned, save for a single security guard patrolling the grounds. Brendan and his biker friends told me they hung out in the parking lot most weekends, pulling donuts and practicing tricks; they said members of Christ United, a megachurch across the road, sometimes look on disapprovingly, but have never intervened.

At the festival's New Frontier showcase of tech-heavy immersive projects, pieces like The Dial are using participants' bodies as the primary mechanism for how they work. Instead of bathing you in passive immersion or forcing fiddly game controllers into your hands, creators are nesting unfamiliar tech with an instrument -- your body -- that's as familiar as the back of your hand. Literally. 

Susoreny originally had planned to open a Los Mamacitas food truck serving tamales, including cheese steak and buffalo chicken ones. But then she found out one of her clients, the acclaimed unconventional fine dining spot Volstead, was closing and decided to take the space over.

"A lot of thought and hard work went into this establishment, and it's run by the owner himself," he said. "I built this car wash so my car could run through it. I'm a car guy who used to work in car sales. I wouldn't run anyone's car through it if I wouldn't run my own car through it."

Bombers BBQ, one of the Region's most celebrated barbecue joints, has more than doubled its space in a new location at 435 Ridge Road in Munster.

"Our customers like that they're always baked from scratch," she said. "We have 30 different flavors at the main store, including vegan and gluten-free options because we understand people here have different lifestyles and dietary needs."

From the 1980s on, the Croatian family-owned business operated out of the Baltimore Food Store in Chicago's Hegewisch neighborhood before selling the neighborhood market more than a decade ago.

"The store is 2,500 square feet large and features the pizza theater design, which is open-concept and features indoor seating as well as free Wi-Fi," spokeswoman Danielle Bulger said. "The store will offer carryout and delivery."
